EpiCenter publication: What Is Lost in the Weismann Barrier?

In this publication, we revisit the long-standing view that info

rmation can only move from the germline to the soma and not the other way around, a concept known as the Weismann barrier. The corollary to this concept is that the influence of an organism's environment on its soma cannot be passed to its progeny the traits of its progeny. Yet, recent and less recent findings in developmental biology and transgenerational epigenetic inheritance have profoundly eroded the oppositional view of germline vs. soma. Here, we make a case for discarding the concept of the Weismann barrier and move towards a more comprehensive view of inheritance.
